Sigma 25 Colonization Project

Post by MethosArchaic on 24th August 2015, 3:38 pm

Much thanks to the original creator of the forgotten lands RP Red. Here is where I pretty much blatently quote her thread, so here goes.

@Red wrote:Welcome aboard, colonists!

It is with much gratitude that we welcome you aboard the UNS Arion, a colonial transport and military vessel. You, our volunteer colonists, are the future of human civilization; much rests on each and every one of your shoulders.

Thus, your ship has been provided with much to assist you in your mission; captained by Melissa Argonova, with twenty years military experience, it is equipped with up-to-date weaponry and houses a full unit of Marines along with a number of combat androids, all of whom have volunteered to guard the vessel during transit and assist with colonization for six months after landing.

Spoiler:

The UNS Arion

It has also been stocked with several months’ worth of provisions, as well as supplies and materials by which you can start constructing the colony in the new world. The ship itself has been equipped with a new AI computer system, AI Unit number A10973885 Arion OS (AriOS). The AI not only runs the ship but acts as a database for any information one may need, and will also be available for the first sixth months of colonization.

Spoiler:

AriOS Hologram

We wish you luck on your mission, for the sake of all humanity.

@Red wrote:The World

The year is 2236, and Earth has long since reached levels of intense overpopulation, and the home world of the human race has become a massive slum. Starting in 2165 humanity gained the technology to be able to terraform planets, a breakthrough that made colonization of other planets suddenly far more viable.

Since then, humans have exploded outward into the universe, pouring in billions of dollars into colonization programs. Most colonies rarely get very far, but a few notable planets have become important to humanity; Mars, the first planet to be terraformed and colonized due to its proximity, and Atalanta, a small, fast orbiting planet in the Small Magellanic Cloud.

The planet to be colonized is currently labeled Sigma 25; if the colonization is considered successful, it will be given a more official name. It has been terraformed to be as Earth-like as possible, though it is only about half the size of Earth itself and slightly hotter, averaging about 130 F in the summer and 70 F in the winter. It has two moons, its day is roughly 21 hours long, and it’s year is 329 days.

Spoiler:

Sigma 25

@Red wrote:Enhancements

Enhancements are a recent invention that give people what are often seen as superhuman abilities. A one-time injection can rewrite your DNA to allow different enhancements to your body and to your mind, some even reaching into the realm of what may be called magic. These enhancements come in two varieties; passive and active. Passive enhancements are enhancements that are always active – an enhancement for eyesight or durability, for example. Active enhancements must be activated with a keyword that the user has chosen, and can be anything from a sudden energy boost to telekinesis to fire manipulation to anything imaginable.

Of course, even simple enhancements are still expensive and the more powerful, ‘magical’ enhancements are still prototypes. Some still have bugs and side effects to the user, but that is a risk that any user of enhancements must take. Too many enhancements have the tendency to cause severe problems to the user, so it is highly recommended that no user give themselves more than two passive enhancements and one active, if at all. Even that is pushing the bounds of what scientists consider ‘safe’ – any more than that and one risks death, insanity, or other uncontrolled mutations.

Still, science is continually looking deeper into the potential for enhancements, and now there is an enhancement for nearly anything you can think of under the sun; but the more powerful and more unique they are, the less safe and the less stable they tend to be.

@MethosArchaic wrote:I would have to assume that construction equipment and colinization supplies would take up much of the cargo space., so most of the battle mecha/vehicles would be military property, though it would be safe to assume you would be able to bring some kind of weapons (civi-legal) for protection or things like that. Though allowing civilians to do so would also increase the chance of vigilanty outbreaks and ciminal activity possibly.

That isn't however what I am after for info. So here goes:

I was wondering what kind of ecosystem/climate/weather we can expect on Sigma 25. As you have two moons, do they have different orbits? What effect do they have on the water of the planet and the weather. Also since the planet is smaller than earth we can safely assume it has less gravity correct? Is part of the day extended due to the moons orbits? Are they visibile during the day or only at night hours?

You've mentioned that it has a hotter over all temperature, so we can expect climiates more like jungles rather than icy regions. Tropical over temperate?

Since we are also in a sci-fi type environ, can we expect more hydroponics than modern traditional farming? Even though it has been terraformed, are their any unusual or harmful, minerals/chemicals we can expect to interact or have to screen against? Is there less/more radiation than on earth?

Who will be left in charge of the colony once the military leaves? Does the Military hold more say than the soon to be established ruling body of the colony?

I was interested in playing a farmer type character, so some engineering/agricultural stuff. After all we have to each, and all that.

@Red wrote:Vehicles

Other than the ship itself, common vehicles that would be on the ship are hovering/flying vehicles: hoverbikes or small military hovercars (Think like ghosts from Halo or the like). In general, they're more like improvements on our current technology, though it's not unheard of for some eccentrics to try and build their own battle mechs. Whether said eccentrics would be able to find room to carry such inventions on board is questionable. Characters can pilot vehicles that they have been trained to pilot.

Colonists

Colonists are volunteers, so they don't necessarily have to have a useful trade, though unique skills would be VERY useful in the colony. Doctors, machinists, engineers, architects, and the like are also highly valued.

Farming isn't entirely done by hand - colonists have access to machinery for plowing, sowing, and the like, but it's certainly not like they may set up a number of farms and let the machines run them. Besides that, the biggest challenge with farming is with the planet itself; while they have been terraformed to be relatively Earth-like, one never gets an exact replica, and often one doesn't know the differences until the crops have failed due to rare rainfall or half the colony has been eaten by the previous native life that has been mutated by the terraforming process. Frankly, the colonization agency has taken a stance of quantity of colonies over quality – terraforming is obscenely expensive, and so a faster, sloppier job is cheaper overall, and overpopulation is such an issue that there will never be a shortage of colonists to throw at a planet should other colonists fail. This means not as many resources as one might like and not as much information about the planet terraformed.

For the first six month, the colonists will have access to some technological conveniences, namely AriOS and her database, but it is largely a frontier. Technology will not be on par with the mainland, and the colonists will not be able to survive unless they work together and are willing to get involved in hard labor. They will always have access to modern weaponry, and colonists are allowed to carry their own weapons, and even encouraged.

Occupations

Possible occupations include:

Engineer

Medic

Manual laborer

Architect

Shopkeeper

Politician

Unemployed

Really, occupations are anything your character might have done before choosing to become a colonist.

Characters may also be part of the military escort, so they might be a space marine, or if they wish they could be one of the combat androids also held on the ship. These would go in the occupation section of the form.

Methos’ questions in the next post, because durn you you ask hard questions.

@Red wrote:For methos: (WARNING: POSSIBLY INACCURATE SCIENCE INCOMING)

The two moons are relatively small and with opposite directional orbits. The two are small enough that normally they have no large impact on the planet, though when both are on the same side of the planet there is enough mass there that it creates a high tide and mucks up the weather so long as they're nearby. The day is largely unaffected by the moons and they are faintly visible during the day as well as during the night. Acceleration due to gravity is actually only slightly smaller than on earth; while it is less massive, it is also smaller in radius, making up for the smaller mass.

Yes, largely tropical over temperate, where there is vegetation; other areas are simply desert.

As for farming method, that is largely up to you, I know little about hydroponics. I imagine traditional farming would be more common in the colonies though, especially in colonies with less water. There is slightly more radiation, and as for other minerals to deal with, little is known.

Once the military leaves, the decision of who is in charge is left entirely up the colonists. The military has no say in the matter afterwords.

As for time of travel, with the ship's warp drive travel could take up to 20 years. Players will be awake when they first board the ship, for introductions and the like, and then will be put to sleep, due to not only constraints with time but with food and other resources that would otherwise be necessary to keep them awake.

I feel I should also note that the military's other role after landing will be to set up communications with the home world, so that the colony's progress might be monitored.

Vye-Avis wrote:Maybe I'm missing a few details, but I just wanted to follow up on Methos' questions out of curiosity. Blame him for all these questions because he got me so interested xD

So why does Sigma 25 have a hotter climate? What is the atmosphere like (thickness, chemical contents, etc) and where is its closest "Sun"? In fact, how many suns are in the solar system in which Sigma 25 resides? In what state is Sigma 25's sun, and what about the planet's magnetic field? Does it have the same properties as Earth's field?

Also, because of the warmer climate, and the lack of cold, icy regions, is there any fresh water found on the planet? What about the precipitation? Is it constant year-round, or are there wet and dry seasons?

@Red wrote:Sigma 25 is hotter because it is slightly closer to the systems sole sun. The atmosphere has been made pseudo-earthlike, so it's chemical contents are passably similar to that of earth. It's the second planet in the system, with only one other terrestrial planet closer to the sun than it. The planet's magnetic field is slightly weaker than earths, but has the same propertires.

Fresh water is found, but only further from the planet's equator, an area which is mostly desert. Precipitation has been entirely uncharted, and seasons as well.

ALSO IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: The rp will start on the planet Atalanta, not Earth, as Atalanta is in the same galaxy as Sigma 25. This will also cut down the travel time to the planet to only 2 years, though passengers will still be put in cryo. I will add more details about Atalanta later.

@Red wrote:Nano-machines are definitely a thing by this point, as well as any other medical technology that you might imagine (spray-on skin, artificially grown organs, anything you can think of is welcome!)

The only limitation on medical technology is in quantity. There is only so much the ship can carry with it, and once those supplies run out the colonists must either find ways to replicate it (unlikely, given their resources), or they must revert back to old medical methods. More expensive equipment will also be less available. The vast majority of the cargo space on the ship is devoted to building supplies and food supplies to start the colony, so medical supplies are highly limited.

Expect a profile on Atalanta late tonight.

@Red wrote:Atalanta

Spoiler:

Atalanta in the foreground

Atalanta is the second successful human colony, after Mars. Atalanta's success was essentially an accident - while billions of dollars were pumped into the colonization of Mars due to the old dream of humanity to live there, colonists were simply thrown at Atalanta after terraforming in the same manner as all others.

Surprisingly, the colonists survived, and in fact thrived in the new world. The colonial agency took this as a sign that their cheaper plan was working, and so devoted less and less money to actually ensuring the planets terraformed were suitable to inhabit; meanwhile, the first settlement flourished eventually into the only major city on Atalanta, a city that would be called Meleager.

Meleager has since turned into a bustling metropolis and the only space port in the Small Magellanic cloud. It is the source of all colonization expeditions into the galaxy, and once it was clear that the colony would thrive the colonial agency sent more colonists with more sophisticated supplies and technology, so the technological level in the city is very modern.

Atalanta is still mostly frontier though, farms and small towns reaching into the wilderness and surviving with less sophisticated technology than the city. The planet is small and a little hotter than earth, and very similar to the recently terraformed Sigma 25, the planet the colonists on this expedition plan to colonize. Because of this, there is much hope for this particular mission.

Atalanta is named such because of the speed with which it rotates; the day is only roughly 13 hours long, and Atalanta was a quick-footed huntress who served Artemis in Greek mythology. The year is also shorter than earth's at 307 days. It has very small moon and the temperature of the planet varies very little with the seasons.

@MethosArchaic wrote:Since we have a space travel type RP, are there alternate life forms out there that interact with earth at this time that we know of? If so what might they be, and their attitudes towards the various types of humanity. (After all if Humans have been separated for long enough, they begin to diverge and develop traits to handle the environs they live with.

Gods the diseases and quarantining.... I always hatted that part. Darn foreign microbes. Other things to wonder about:

Are Artificial Intelligence confined to a set of rules or the more commonly know term 'Laws'?

Are there any A.I.'s that have separated and overcome them or set up there own 'race/species'?

You mentioned cybernetics... well advanced medical stuff anyway. Is there any discrimination for those that have these? Like if they purposely are augmenting themselves beyond a traditional application? How do 'enhancements' fit into these feelings?

Are there certain minimum level cybernetics or interfacing that is standard for most humans to have in an accepted level? Like neural interfacing or things like that. Kind of like how most people have and are expected to have internet nowadays or cellphones. Even most schools are starting to made laptops and email homework. Or looking above at a earlier question: Some sort of artificial immunization booster or self replicating nanobot to help handle foreign infection when going to new planets.

Are there any interesting new universal holidays or traditions?

Has humanity gotten to a point where it coexists with itself or has it gotten worse? Do most humans refer to themselves by the source of their birth? (Like Earthlings, Martians, Spacers, etc.)

Do the humans from Mars have any odd traits or physical characteristics that set them apart from others? (Ohh god, I forgot about dialects...)

Is there a standard Human language that is accepted as the norm for conversation? Meaning that it may be quite obvious when colonists speak, to those that are military or spacers. (*thinks* Kind of like how Gren and Garm spoke very differently than others in Guild. Or any of the real world examples would work too.)

@Red wrote:There are, as of yet, no known new lifeforms have been discovered, and humanity has not been separated for quite long enough on different colonies that they have diverged in any meaningful way.

Artificial Intelligences are governed by a set of Laws, mainly laws that ensure their subservience to humanity. These laws are part of their code - to an AI, not following the Laws is like not breathing. Because of that, AIs have not really separated from humanity yet as their own species, though many people fear this.

Common enhancements and cybernetics are largely accepted, including bionic limbs; some of these are actually viewed with respect, as a sign of military service. But much like how in the modern day one tattoo is cool while full-body tattoos are considered weird, people who overly enhance themselves are sort of social pariahs. People like this are usually the ones with the unique, more powerful enhancements, or with a number of bionic add-ons, and they have their own little communities, but are largely looked down upon by most.

Most people do have an interface - a permanent attachment, sort of like a bluetooth, behind the ear. When activated it opens an interface in front of the user's eyes like a bizarre pair of sunglasses, and from there the user is able to access the planet's internet and such. There is no easy portable way to communicate with other planets yet, and most such communications are military, and it costs money to call other planets (and of course, there is significant lag, so most people use it to send video mail back and forth, as opposed to trying to call them).

On Atalanta, at least, the people celebrate a day roughly midway through the year to commemorate the founding of the planet. It's celebrated much like the new year. Other than that, few interesting new holidays/traditions.

Humanity coexists to an extent now. Earth is largely unified, though the majority of the planet is an overcrowded slum with high crime rates, and Mars and Atalanta are all unified under one government. The colonies are in a confederation with Earth, but there is some definite prejudice towards the other planets, and residents refer to themselves by their planet. In general, Martians are considered to be snobbish and arrogant, Earthlings seen to be violent rednecks, and Atalantans seen as shady and untrustworthy.

As mentioned before, the colonies haven't been separated quite long enough for many changes, and the standard human language is English due to it's dominance on Earth during colonization. Thus English is pretty much the most common language on all the colonies; it was the common language among colonists, and those who spoke other languages had a hard time preserving it in the colonies. If anything, its Earthlings that would stand out, as they still have a large mix of languages and accents, and anyone who 'talks funny' is usually from Earth. Martians tend to speak more formally, though.

Re: Sigma 25 Colonization Project

Post by MethosArchaic on 8th October 2016, 4:04 pm

Hello to everyone involved in Sigma 25, or just those reading along for whimsy. I'm fixing to start wrapping up the space part of the Roleplay and considering doing a number of posts to speed through that part and actually get to the civilization building that Sigma was actually about.

The RP is a continuation RP off of the Forgotten Lands RP that was originally created by Red. That was why we started it with being in space and the whole ship malfunctioning thing due to outside influences.

Right now in the RP, Pheobe and AriOS have disabled the ship rather than risk further infection by the hostile AI hacking everything. Numerous systems have crashed or been burnt out in the attempt. The general jist though is to get the hostile droids destroyed and repair the systems in a safe manner while making sure they aren't infected by the AI.
I plan to get the pods fixed back up, maybe with help, and then put most of the people back into cryogenic storage until the ship lands. I've been working out what sort of issues this incident will have on the colony, and how it may affect the resources available to you. After all additional food/supplies are going to be used up faster than expected to get you back into stasis, and the ship repaired. I'll try my best however to avoid using most of your resources to the best of the captain's ability.
Some of you might offer your talents to assist in the work efforts, and with many of the crew dead, they will gladly appreciate it. What I really want to know is if you want me to try and fast forward through the ships repairs/space stuff, or if you'd like me to just take my time in doing that so your characters can grow more naturally?
I'd like everyone's opinions on this matter, and any further ideas you can post in here or PM me at your leisure.

I don't mind going forward in this one because I find the part with the attack on the ship a bit long. But its also that the part i look forward the most is the part where we will colonize and stuff. Dunno what the others want however, I'm okay with both directions, but it would be okay to me to fast forward things a bit.

Re: Sigma 25 Colonization Project

Post by MethosArchaic on 27th November 2016, 5:37 pm

Since rereading a lot of the old responses from the Forgotten land RP discussion is troublesome I'm going to instead go through them and basically make a newer up to date post on Sigma 25's planet information. I'm not a scientist, but I tried to explain a few of the reasons for Sigma unique characteristics as simply as a could without just going "Cause I say so"

Dual moons:
Hasel the closest of the two moons is the smallest, and orbits clockwise around the planet, while Wuole is slightly bigger and orbits counter clockwise. Despite the difference in distance and size, the orbit are very similar speed to each other.

Tides: Due to the small size of the moons, they have a fairly minor impact on the tides as people on earth would be used to. However there are two conjunction points that do generate a noticeable tide. This occurs every 54 to 67 days when both moons orbits converge closest to each other for a few hours, typically 2-4 when the tide spikes roughly a foot higher towards them.

Star: MoR77353- Designated Mort. Is a G-type yellow dwarf similar to our sun but slightly smaller. Sigma-25 orbits orbits closer astronomically than Earth does to Sol, however it high temperatures are less a factor of it's proximity to it's parent star as due to it's two moons. Due to their orbits they reflect a fair amount of stellar radiation back towards Sigma and increase it's over all temperature.

Days: The day is roughly 21 hours long, and it is very common for one or both moons to make an appearance throughout the day or night. Nights are far more illuminated than those of Earth. Due to the reflection of stellar light off the two moons the nights are more comparable to Earth's dusk. This light pollution caused by Sigma's moons, means that the stars can only really be seen during late night even though Sigma has no light pollution caused by advanced civilization yet. Daytime can be measured at roughly 14.5 hours long.

Years and Seasons: The yearly cycle of Sigma around Mort is 329 days. Sigma does experience seasons but it's Winters are mild with no chance of snow. Temperatures range from 130 F in the Summer to 70 F in the winter, with temperatures in the more habitable zones being slightly closer to the median than the cooler poles and hotter deserts.

Gravity: is roughly 73% that of Earth, Roughly twice that of Mars and nearly three times as great as Atalanta. This is due to the fact that Sigma is roughly half the size of the earth but it's mass is significantly denser than that of earth. Speculation estimates that Sigma may yield significant deposits dense metals or heavy earth metals.

Water/Precipitation/Storms: Larger deposits of lakes can be found closer to the poles of Sigma than towards it's equator where it is a barren desert. However much of Sigma's fresh water shows up in ever changing rivers and streams after it's fairly frequent rains. Humidity on Sigma is fairly high and can be very oppressive to those new to it. Though the moons don't seem to have much effect on tides they do have a large effect on the water vapor in the air, constantly churning up storms, sometimes incredibly violent ones. Many of Sigma's intense storms form can and often do form hail.

Topography: Sigma's tectonic activity isn't as extreme as that of Earth and as such large mountains are fairly uncommon except where plates meet, and many of these are far smaller than expected due to water erosion from it's frequent rains.

Spoiler:

Re: Sigma 25 Colonization Project

Sigma Flora/Fauna/Wildlife

Most of Sigma is dominated by plant life and resembles something akin to a prehistoric jungle. Many species of plants and fungi can be found. However the big difference is the wildlife.
Sigma's wildlife includes numerous small vertebrates and invertebrates. Many insects and pollinators exist on Sigma, to help the spread and maintain the plant life. Other animals also exist, though none of the introduced species of the original seeding projects were very large. There are several types of small birds, reptiles, amphibians and rodents. The seeding project was careful not to introduce large potentially dangerous animals to Sigma that could pose a major risk to colonization.
However, there is still a need to be careful and alert when exploring. It is impossible to control every element, and new species might have evolved or familiar species might have adapted in unexpected ways. This isn't to say that all of the original creatures/plants are all edible or safe, all colonists are warned to be extra alert and careful as well as to report all injuries regardless of severity.
