Poetry Sharing.

Post by EphPhoenix on 20th July 2011, 6:22 pm

Now, considering reading the title, I'm sure you're thinking, "This belongs in the Art & Lit section." Buuuut, it's not "member" poetry. The idea I had is that people submit a poem they like, whether it be by someone famous or one they saw on another forum, or whatever then why they like that poem, what it means to them, and/or any interesting stories behind it. Also, those who post after a poem, feel free to comment about a poem someone's posted, if you like it as well and why (if you want), etc. I'll start.

We Wear the Mask
by Paul Lawrence Dunbar

We wear the mask that grins and lies,
It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,—
This debt we pay to human guile;
With torn and bleeding hearts we smile,
And mouth with myriad subtleties.

Why should the world be over-wise,
In counting all our tears and sighs?
Nay, let them only see us, while
We wear the mask.

We smile, but, O great Christ, our cries
To thee from tortured souls arise.
We sing, but oh the clay is vile
Beneath our feet, and long the mile;
But let the world dream otherwise,
We wear the mask!

I've loved this poem ever since I heard it in high school. I thought it such an essential truth, how so many different emotions, feelings, hurts, longings are raging inside of us, but we never let anyone see it because we hide behind our masks.

This is a great idea, Phoenix! I really like this, thank you for your contribution. =) I also really like this poem, although it makes me very sad.

Well...thanks, I guess. Just an idea I had, but I'm glad you like it. And yes, it is sad because everyone does this and some suffer in silence for years. 10 years ago, a younger, more idealistic me had decided for this very reason to start reaching out to people, that maybe I could learn to see through the obvious, and help them. Ahh...memories. XD

Sometimes, seeing behind that mask can be scary or dangerous. I think I'm just too much of a wuss to go looking. You never know what you might find there. A gentle, kind artist? A true religious and spiritual being? A murderer? A stalker?

I understand. But I'm obsessed with seeing the truth, and it's seldom kind or pretty. And as my boy Marcus used to say: "And even when it is, there's still something ugly behind it." XD

I want the truth, no matter the cost, no matter the consequences. Besides, nothing makes reaches people better than seeing them for who they are, flaws and all, and accepting them.

Double post powers activate! (as permitted by Leah)

Invictus
by William Ernest Henley

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

Another of my alltime favs. I was exposed to this in 10th grade and had to read it in class, stunning them all. This may have been where I got my first taste of poetry reading for Forensics tournaments for Drama. XD

This is a poem I oftentimes come back to. It's a poem that are words to live by: no matter what is thrown at you, never give in. And that is sometimes the hardest thing to do in life: to not give up, to not roll over and die after you've been knocked down hard. Invuctus is latin for "unconquerable" or "invincible." This poem has always been an aid to remember that fighting spirit, to keep on fighting, and to spit in the eye of Fate when she does her best to screw me over and to not just be complacent and accept whatever's happening to me as permanent.

Very powerful. I absolutely love the last two lines. xD That's an awesome finish.

Here's my shares, for I have two:

Question [1]
by Langston Hughes

When the old junk man Death
Comes to gather up our bodies
And toss them into the sack of oblivion,
I wonder if he will find
The corpse of a white multi-millionaire
Worth more pennies of eternity,
Than the black torso of
A Negro cotton-picker.

Silence
by Langston Hughes

I catch the pattern
Of your silence
Before you speak

I do not need
To hear a word.

In your silence
Every tone I seek
Is heard.

I love Langston Hughes' poetry.

Lady Lazarus by Sylvia Plath. Spoiler'd because it's a long one.

Spoiler:
I have done it again.
One year in every ten
I manage it--

A sort of walking miracle, my skin
Bright as a Nazi lampshade,
My right foot

A paperweight,
My face a featureless, fine
Jew linen.

Peel off the napkin
O my enemy.
Do I terrify?--

The nose, the eye pits, the full set of teeth?
The sour breath
Will vanish in a day.

Soon, soon the flesh
The grave cave ate will be
At home on me

And I a smiling woman.
I am only thirty.
And like the cat I have nine times to die.

This is Number Three.
What a trash
To annihilate each decade.

What a million filaments.
The peanut-crunching crowd
Shoves in to see

Them unwrap me hand and foot--
The big strip tease.
Gentlemen, ladies

These are my hands
My knees.
I may be skin and bone,

Nevertheless, I am the same, identical woman.
The first time it happened I was ten.
It was an accident.

The second time I meant
To last it out and not come back at all.
I rocked shut

As a seashell.
They had to call and call
And pick the worms off me like sticky pearls.

Dying
Is an art, like everything else.
I do it exceptionally well.

I do it so it feels like hell.
I do it so it feels real.
I guess you could say I've a call.

It's easy enough to do it in a cell.
It's easy enough to do it and stay put.
It's the theatrical

Comeback in broad day
To the same place, the same face, the same brute
Amused shout:

'A miracle!'
That knocks me out.
There is a charge

For the eyeing of my scars, there is a charge
For the hearing of my heart--
It really goes.

And there is a charge, a very large charge
For a word or a touch
Or a bit of blood

Or a piece of my hair or my clothes.
So, so, Herr Doktor.
So, Herr Enemy.

I am your opus,
I am your valuable,
The pure gold baby

That melts to a shriek.
I turn and burn.
Do not think I underestimate your great concern.

Ash, ash--
You poke and stir.
Flesh, bone, there is nothing there--

A cake of soap,
A wedding ring,
A gold filling.

Herr God, Herr Lucifer
Beware
Beware.

Out of the ash
I rise with my red hair
And I eat men like air.

D*yum. I liked it. O.O

That was really good...and sad...and deliciously spiteful.

Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night
by Dylan Thomas

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
